Seasonal hair loss, also known as telogen effluvium, is a common concern that many individuals face. As the weather changes and our bodies adapt to the new environmental conditions, it's not uncommon to notice an increase in hair fall.

While a certain amount of hair loss is normal and part of the natural hair growth cycle, excessive shedding can be distressing and impact one's confidence. However, with a few simple lifestyle adjustments and proactive measures, you can effectively minimise seasonal hair loss and maintain a healthy, luscious mane throughout the year.

Dr Charu Sharma, head of dermatology at Cureskin, said: “Primarily caused by environmental factors and changes in daylight/temperature, leading to a temporary increase in hair shedding, seasonal hair loss typically follows a pattern associated with specific times of the year. It falls under the category of telogen effluvium.”

Some causes of seasonal hair loss

According to Dr Charu Sharma seasonal hair loss can be caused due to the following factors:

Humidity: Changes in humidity can affect the scalp's moisture balance, leading to dryness or excess oil production, both of which can contribute to hair shedding.

Sun Exposure: Increased exposure to the sun can damage hair shafts, making them more brittle and prone to breakage.

Temperature Fluctuations: Sudden temperature changes can stress the scalp and hair, leading to increased shedding.

Five tips that can help in preventing or reducing seasonal hair loss

Dr Sharma gives the following tips to effectively manage and prevent seasonal hair loss:

Protein intake

Hair is primarily made of keratin, a type of protein. Including sufficient protein in your diet from sources like milk, paneer, curd, eggs, chicken, fish, soy, and legumes can promote healthy hair growth

Essential vitamins and minerals

Ensure your diet includes adequate vitamins and minerals that are crucial for hair growth and strength. Focus on foods rich in:

*Vitamin D: Found in fatty fish, fortified dairy products, and through sunlight exposure.

*B Vitamins (especially Biotin): Found in eggs, nuts, and whole grains.

*Iron: Found in lean meats, spinach, and lentils.

*Zinc: Found in nuts, seeds, and legumes.

*Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to keep your hair and scalp hydrated from within.

Proper hair care routine

*Gentle Shampooing: Use a mild shampoo suitable for your hair type to avoid stripping the scalp of natural oils. Avoid over washing, it can lead to dryness and hair breakage.

*Condition Regularly: Use a conditioner after every wash to keep hair moisturised and reduce tangling and breakage. Consider deep conditioning treatments once a week.

Avoid harsh chemicals

*Scalp Massage: Regularly massage your scalp to stimulate blood circulation and promote healthy hair follicles.

*Exfoliation: Use a gentle exfoliating scrub on your scalp occasionally to remove the buildup of dead skin cells and product residue, ensuring a clean environment for hair growth.

Protect hair from environmental damage

*Sun Protection: Wear hats or use hair products with UV filters to protect hair from sun damage during the summer months.

*Cold Weather Care: Protect hair from harsh winds by wearing scarves or hats. Use a humidifier indoors to prevent the air from becoming too dry.

*Avoid Chlorine and Salt Water: Rinse hair with fresh water before and after swimming in pools or the ocean to reduce dryness effects.

*Reduce heat styling.

Genetic factors that may contribute to seasonal hair loss

Dr Sharma says, “While seasonal hair loss is primarily influenced by environmental factors and changes in the hair growth cycle, genetic predisposition can also play a role. Individuals with a family history of hair loss may be more susceptible to seasonal shedding. Genetics can influence the sensitivity of hair follicles to environmental changes, potentially making some individuals more susceptible to seasonal shedding.”

She suggests keeping an eye on changes in hair density and shedding patterns, especially during seasonal transitions. Early detection allows for prompt intervention.

“Regular check-ups with the dermatologist can help monitor hair health and implement preventive treatments, topical serums and oils under dermatologist supervision if necessary,” she continues.

In addition, she says, nutritional support, balanced diet and  hydration, along with seasonal protection and stress management are key to preventing hair loss.
