MAJORITY OF AMERICANS SAY THEY GET THE DESIRED EXERCISE DESPITE NO GYMS

Most Americans say they get all the exercise they need without even entering a gym, according to a new study. According to a survey conducted by Nature’s Bounty - a probiotic brand - six in 10 US adults say they get all the workout needed while they do their everyday tasks and household chores.

A new study that comprised at least 2,000 men and women found the average person considers themselves active five times every week and exercises four times weekly — and 54 per cent said they do not go to the gym, ever.

And since many skip the conventional gym, 98 per cent believed they get a workout in while taking on everyday tasks which include walking around the neighbourhood, walking up and down the stairs, working in the yard, cleaning their home, taking their dog for a walk, and shopping for groceries. Also, many feel other tasks like gardening, taking the trash out, stretching after getting out of bed, doing dishes and laundry, standing on their feet for at least four hours or even getting kids ready for school are part of their daily exercise.

The study also revealed 70 per cent believe they are healthy, and many compared their level of health with different physical activity levels. Accepting these activities as part of their balanced lifestyle could contribute to overall well-being. Also, 10 per cent reported feeling as if they were a superhero or professional athlete, while 17 per cent felt 10 years younger, according to the New York Post.

“It is encouraging to recognize how everyday activities can feel like feats of strength to so many people and to understand that our bodies have an innate ability to support our overall health and wellness too - the power is already within us,” said Jaclyn Safrath, MS, MPH, medical affairs manager, Nestlé Health Science, maker of Nature’s Bounty. “But it is clear that many want to constantly improve their health - finding ways to give that extra 10 per cent and push what their bodies can do.”

At the core of feeling physically apt, the study found a connection between diet and activity levels.
