VITILIGO AND SUN PROTECTION: ESSENTIAL TIPS

Vitiligo is a chronic skin disease characterized by the loss of pigment cells (melanocytes), resulting in the appearance of white spots on various parts of the body. Some of the factors responsible for the development of vitiligo are genetic factors, an autoimmune disorder where the immune system mistakenly targets and destroys melanocytes (the cells responsible for producing skin pigment), leading to the loss of skin color, environmental factors like exposure to specific chemicals, sunburn all results in change of skin color.

Sun protection is crucial for people with vitiligo, as pigmented patches of skin are more sensitive to sunburn and UV radiation.

Here are some sun protection tips to follow:● Apply sunscreen: Sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is recommended because it offers protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

● Extra protection: Long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and wide-brimmed hats must be worn.

● Protection from UV rays: Using umbrella and sunglasses during broad daylight provides more protection from harmful sun rays.

● Avoid reflective surfaces: Surfaces such as water, sand and concrete can reflect and intensify UV rays, increasing the risk of sunburn.

Essential tips to be followed for affected skin:● Check for changes or new spots on the skin and consult a dermatologist for tailored treatment.

● Use mild soaps and skin care products to avoid irritating sensitive skin.

● Proper balanced diet rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals must be followed to support overall skin health.

● By engaging in stress-relief activities like yoga, meditation, will reduce stress to a greater extent and also improve skin health.

● Counseling or therapy can help manage the emotional impact of vitiligo.

Vitiligo can affect mental health due to its visible nature and its psychological impact. Effective treatment of vitiligo involves both medical treatment and regular counseling. One of the most important aspects of vitiligo management is protecting the skin from sun damage, as depigmented areas are very sensitive to sunburn and UV rays. Individuals with vitiligo can minimize the risk of sunburn and long-term skin damage by following a healthy lifestyle and with regular checkups.
