KEEP CALM AND DRINK COFFEE IF YOU ARE SITTING FOR TOO LONG. IT'S GOOD FOR HEALTH

Sitting for long periods on an office chair or couch can be harmful to your health over time. However, drinking coffee regularly might help offset these negative effects.

A study involving over 10,000 people in the United States found that daily coffee drinkers may be protected from the dangers of sitting for six or more hours a day.

According to the study, published in BMC Public Health, sedentary coffee drinkers are 1.58 times less likely to die from any cause within 13 years compared to non-coffee drinkers who sit for the same amount of time.

Researchers at Soochow University in China conducted the study, which is the first to investigate how coffee might counteract the increased risk of death associated with prolonged sitting.

They analysed long-term health data from the US and discovered that drinking coffee cancels out the link between a sedentary lifestyle and death from cardiovascular disease and all causes.

This finding is significant because previous research suggests that even regular exercise may not fully protect against the long-term health risks of prolonged sitting, such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, or stroke.

Among the 10,639 participants in the study, those who sat for more than eight hours a day had a higher risk of death from all causes and cardiovascular disease compared to those who sat for less than four hours a day.

However, this increased risk was only observed in adults who did not drink coffee.

Sedentary individuals who did drink coffee had a reduced risk of death from cardiovascular disease, regardless of how many cups they consumed daily.

Those who drank more than two and a half cups of coffee per day also had a lower risk of death from all causes compared to non-coffee drinkers who sat for at least six hours.

While the study doesn't explain why coffee might have this protective effect, previous research has linked coffee consumption to longer and healthier lives.

Caffeine has been shown to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Even decaffeinated coffee is rich in antioxidants that can boost metabolism and reduce inflammation.

Some compounds in coffee may also protect the brain from diseases like Parkinson's.

These findings are promising, but more research is needed to understand the ideal dosage and the mechanisms behind coffee's health benefits.

"Given that coffee is a complex compound, further research is needed to explore this miracle compound," researchers at Soochow University concluded.
