YOU CAN ‘LEARN’ HAPPINESS NOW. ONLY IF YOU PRACTICE THOUGH

Happiness. It's a universal desire, yet it can feel elusive. We chase it through achievements, possessions, and relationships, but sometimes a sense of contentment seems just out of reach. But what if happiness wasn't a destination, but a skill to be learned? At least, that's what researchers from the University of Bristol have found.

Short-term happiness gains fizzle out quickly without long-term habits like gratitude, exercise, meditation, or journaling, according to this groundbreaking study.

"It's like going to the gym—we can't expect to do one class and be fit forever. Just as with physical health, we have to continuously work on our mental health, otherwise the improvements are temporary,” senior author Bruce Hood said in the university's statement.

Dr Parth Nagda, consultant psychiatry at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Navi Mumbai, agreed, adding that research in positive psychology suggests our thoughts and interpretations significantly influence our emotional state.

"We can learn to reframe negative thinking, cultivate a more optimistic outlook and be happy. And as with any skill, happiness can be improved through practice and techniques that can be learned and developed over time, like gratitude exercises, mindfulness meditation, and building strong relationships," Dr Nagda explained in an interaction with indianexpress.com.

He noted that the key seems to be consistent practice and effort, similar to learning an instrument. However, he did warn that life often throws curveballs, and happiness is a state, not a constant trait. Even with these skills, unhappiness is a normal part of life and should be accepted.

How can you help yourself be happier?

According to Dr Nagda, here are some things you can do:

Mind your body: Exercise is a powerful mood booster. Aim for at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity activity most days of the week.

Adequate sleep: Getting 7-8hrs of sleep is crucial for emotional well-being.

Practice gratitude: Take time each day to reflect on things you're thankful for, big or small.

Spend time in nature: Sunshine and fresh air can work wonders. Make an effort to get outside each day, even if it's just for a short walk.

Connect with others: Strong social connections are essential for happiness. Nurture your relationships with loved ones and build new ones through hobbies or social groups.

Do things you enjoy: Make time for activities that bring you joy, whether it's reading, playing music, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing a hobby.

Help others: Helping those in need is a great way to boost your mood and sense of purpose. Volunteer your time or simply do something nice for someone.

Challenge negative thinking: When negative thoughts arise, challenge them with more realistic or positive ones.

Forgive yourself and others: Holding onto grudges can weigh you down. Practice forgiveness for yourself and others to move forward.

Remember, happiness is a journey, not a destination. Be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress. If you're struggling to find happiness on your own, consider seeking professional help.
