Masaba Gupta has been on a fitness journey for the past few years. After making innumerable changes and trying out various dietary and fitness changes, the fashion designer admitted to joining the 5 am club. "5.41 am = Water + Read + Workout," shared Gupta.

For the unversed, the 5 am club means waking up at 5 am and starting the day with purposeful activities. But if you ask Saurabh Bothra, CEO, Habuild, he redefined the ‘5 am club’ as the most important habit for self-care and the first step towards self-love, which everyone should take.

"In the times that we live in, the minute we open our eyes, the world starts bombarding our brain with all kinds of information. We let other situations, information, and people set the tone of our day. But isn’t this supposed to be our right? Absolutely! And waking up at 5 am gives us that freedom. Early mornings offer a quiet and focused time to contribute towards our physical, emotional, and mental well-being," Bothra said.

How does it help with fitness habits?

If you wake up early and exercise, you're starting your day with a win! It will create a positive ripple effect throughout your day, making you more likely to stick to your fitness goals. According to Bothra, when it comes to building and maintaining habits, consistency is the key. "When you start early in the day and go for a run or do yoga regularly, you are making a routine that will help your mind and body to adapt and stay consistent," said Bothra.

The quiet, distraction-free time in the early morning allows you to focus and reflect on your other habits.

What are the benefits?

It can give you the stamina and motivation to stay active throughout the day, enhancing your performance, Bothra said.

What to keep in mind?

*If you're just beginning, don't feel pressured to wake up at 5 am immediately. Ease into it by setting your alarm 30 minutes earlier each week.

For example, if you usually wake up at 8 am, try 7:30 am for a week, then slowly advance to 7 am, 6 am, and eventually 5:30 am. "Let your body adapt to this new habit rather than forcing the concept upon it," said Bothra.

You can include the following activities in your routine

Exercise

Cortisol or stress hormone is highest in the morning, helping us wake up and be alert. But we need to make sure that it doesn’t affect our entire day. "The best way to balance it out is to move! Go for a run, practice yoga asanas, or do your regular workout. It will set a stage for a calmer day," said Bothra.

Reflect

Reflecting on your thoughts and actions can help you start your day with a purpose. "You can try meditating or simply practicing Pranayama. Focusing on breath will help you reduce the cortisol in your body and bring clarity. You can also try journalling and preparing a to-do list that can guide you throughout the day," said Bothra.

Learn

Since you are detached from the world for a short period - focus on your learning. "Read a book that helps you develop personally," said Bothra.

Being consistent with these habits will help you decide how your day would look like for the next 12-15 hours.

For whom does it work better?

According to Bothra, everyone should implement this concept. "It will take your personal and professional growth to another level. You don’t necessarily have to wake up at 5 am. The goal here is to have a quiet time reserved only for yourself. And you need to be serious about using this period for your growth. Always remember that growth is the core of self-love - that’s how you unlock your true potential," said Bothra.
