CATARACT: 6 AYURVEDIC REMEDIES, LIFESTYLE TIPS TO IMPROVE EYESIGHT, KEEP EYES HEALTHY

Cataract being the leading cause of blindness is a major public health problem in India resulting in not only individual suffering but also large economic losses and societal burdens. A survey conducted by WHO and the National Programme for Control of Blindness (NPCB) reveals that there are over 22 million blind eyes (equivalent to 12 million blind people) in the country, with cataracts accounting for 80.1% of these cases. The annual incidence of cataract-induced blindness is estimated to be around 3.8 million.

Cataracts, a common eye disorder characterised by clouding of the lens, can severely impair vision if not treated properly. While modern medicine provides surgical options, Ayurveda takes a holistic approach to cataract prevention that includes lifestyle changes, herbal cures, and traditional therapies. Here are some Ayurvedic ways to help prevent Cataract suggested by Dr Mandeep Singh Basu, Director- Dr. Bsu Eye Hospital

Triphala water eye wash:  Triphala, a traditional Ayurvedic formulation made from three fruits (Amla, haritaki, and bibhitaki), is renowned for its health benefits. Using triphala water as an eye wash can help cleanse the eyes and maintain their health. This practice is believed to reduce the risk of cataract formation by keeping the eyes free from infections and impurities.

Tarpan and ashchyotan karma: Tarpan and Ashchyotan Karma are Ayurvedic treatments specifically designed for eye health. Tarpan involves placing medicated ghee around the eyes, providing nourishment and improving vision. Ashchyotan Karma involves the application of herbal eye drops to cleanse and rejuvenate the eyes. These therapies are recommended to maintain optimal eye health.

Avoid extreme heat or cold exposure: Extreme conditions might have a negative impact on eye health. Long-term exposure to heat can induce dryness and irritation, but extreme cold can cause blood vessel constriction, reducing blood flow to the eyes. Ayurveda recommends maintaining a moderate environment to protect the eyes from these harsh situations.

Quit smoking: Smoking accelerates the growth of cataracts. The toxic compounds included in tobacco smoke can damage the proteins in the eye's lens, causing clouding. Ayurveda emphasises the need of avoiding such unhealthy practices in order to maintain general health, including eye health.

Avoid using over-the-counter medicines that include steroids:  Long-term steroid use also increases the risk of developing cataracts. Steroids can cause alterations in the eye's lens structure, which promotes cataract development. Ayurvedic practitioners and doctors strongly advise against using such drugs without supervision.

Regular eye check-ups: Regular check-ups are very important for early detection and management of cataracts. These can help monitor eye health and detect any early signs of cataract formation, allowing for timely intervention.
